LOUDER THAN A BOMB
USA, not rated, 99 minutes
Thursday, November 4 | 7:30 PM
A film about passion, competition, teamwork, and trust. It’s about the joy of being young, and the pain of growing up. It’s about speaking out, making noise, and finding your voice.
It also just happens to be about poetry: it tells the story of four Chicago high school poetry teams as they prepare for and compete in the world's largest youth slam. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the film captures the tempestuous lives of some unforgettable kids, exploring the ways writing shapes their world, and vice versa. While the topics they tackle are often deeply personal, what they put into their poems—and what they get out of them—is universal.
The film premiered in March 2010 at the Cleveland International Film Festival, where it won both the Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Choice Award for Best Film and the Greg Gund Memorial Standing Up Film Competition for films that celebrate social justice and activism. In August, Louder Than a Bomb screened in New York City and Los Angeles as part of the 2010 DocuWeeks Theatrical Showcase, which is designed to qualify films for Academy Award consideration. It also won both the Best of the Fest Audience Award and the Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Woods Hole Film Festival.
SPEAKERS: Director Greg Jacobs, film subjects Novana Venerable and Jesse Welch, and Louder Than a Bomb poetry slam co-founder Anna West (currently a fellow at Harvard University). Moderated by award-winning slam poet Regie Gibson.
