Bulgaria/Germany/Slovenia/Hungary, no rating, 105 minutes

In Bulgarian, German, Italian and Slovenian with English subtitles

Starring Miki Maniljovic (Irina Palm, BWF'08)

The World Is Big & Salvation Lurks Around the Corner begins in 1975 when Bulgaria was ruled by an oppressive political regime that encouraged distrust among its people. In the film, authorities ask a man to file intelligence reports on his own father-in-law, who was known for openly disrespecting Bulgaria’s leadership. Fearing for his life, the son-in-law flees to Germany with his wife and young son after a long stay in a refugee camp.  When the son, now in his early thirties, survives a car accident in which his parents perish, he loses any memory of his past. Hoping to lift his grandson’s spirits and refresh his mind, the grandfather travels to visit him in the hospital in Germany. A search for family and cultural identity follows on a tandem bicycle ride from Germany to Bulgaria.

Followed by a performance by Divi Zheni, a Boston-based Balkan women's chorus & orchestra, directed by Bulgarian folk singing legend Tatiana Sarbinska.
