5TH
ANNUAL FAMILY FESTIVAL
HULA GIRLS (age 12 & up)
Japan,
no rating

Sunday,
November 11 | 7:00 PM
Followed by a hula demonstration and lesson. Come express yourself through hula!
In a desperate attempt to save
the local economy when faced with the closing of their coal mine in a remote
town in northern Japan, the town elders decide to cash in on the Polynesian
craze by building a Hawaiian theme park, complete with hula dancers. The only
problem: no one knows how to dance the hula. Things get worse when they import
an alcoholic hula teacher from Tokyo, and the only ones who sign up for classes
are a handful of misfits. Set in 1965 and based on a true story, the film is
the heartwarming comedy about a group of coal miners’ daughters who took a
chance.
The film was Japan’s
official entry for Best Foreign Film to the 2006 Academy Awards.
Tickets for this Family Festival event only are $8/$7 for seniors
and students. Purchase in advance or day of show at the Studio Cinema box
office or online at www.mktix.com.
